LIFT THE WEIGHT OR DEEPEN THE WOUND
VAISHALI SHARMA
FND is a debilitating neurological condition with symptoms like Parkinson’s. Along with the physical symptoms that affect a person’s quality of life, the stigma surrounding the condition—from the healthcare system, loved ones or society as a whole—can take a psychological toll. This artwork contrasts the effects of this societal stigma with the concept of compassion. The goal of this project is to raise awareness that FND is a very real condition, affecting not only the artist but many others who share similar experiences of judgment and/or support. Words drawn from the artist’s personal experience, as well as the shared experiences of others, help tell the story. The hands in the artwork either offer support or point fingers, while the brain is enclosed in a bubble, symbolizing the limitations imposed by the condition. Through this thought-provoking art, the artist seeks to shed light on the mental impact of society’s perception of this condition
